Punta Gorda, Florida

"The BEST place to live in the SOUTH!"

Statistical Information

by MONEY Magazine  1996 - 2000

ClockOur secret is out! Locals have known for years that Punta Gorda and Charlotte County offer a unique way of life. From the hand-painted murals gracing many buildings in town to our quaint town center bordered by a district of restored historic homes, Punta Gorda reflects the care and pride of its residents. Life here is a little slower, a little more peaceful. Drive or jog across the bridges over Charlotte Harbor and watch dolphins at play. There are miles of canals bordered by lovely homes with manicured lawns. Color is everywhere from the tropical vegetation -- neon-colored bougainvillea, the bright hues of hibiscus, the cool green of coconut palms. The canals shimmer with the reflections of sailboats and their rigging, and of the powerful fishing boats that go out deep into the Gulf of Mexico. Toward evening stroll through one of our parks along Charlotte Harbor and watch the most awesome sunsets. A slight breeze ripples the surface of the Harbor scattering the reflected gold, bronze, and crimson. Salute the first stars of the evening from one of the many waterfront restaurants.
Court House
Punta Gorda's newest landmark-the Charlotte County Courthouse. The waves under the sun in the sculpture move and shimmer with the breeze.
And what will tomorrow bring? Perhaps some exciting world-class tarpon fishing in Boca Grande Pass is planned, or maybe fishing for redfish or snook in the rivers or off of one of the bridges. A graceful sail to one of the barrier islands for lunch and some shelling is another alternative. With 120 sq. miles, pristine Charlotte Harbor offers it all. Maybe golf is the order of the day. Over twenty challenging golf courses abound to test the skills of all levels. Photo opportunities of our local water fowl are everywhere. Punta Gorda oozes with small town atmosphere. We like it that way.
Other contributing factors to being the #1 place in the South for two years in a row are:
  • The highest rated economy will lead the nation through the year 2025.
  • A nearly-perfect climate with an average annual temperature of 74 degrees F (Take a look at our present weather report).
  • An average temperature in January of 63 degrees F
  • Pristine waters and no industrial air pollution
  • Minimal crime with violent crime 59% below the national average
MuralThere is no personal income tax in the state of Florida. County sales tax is seven percent, with food and medicine being exempt. Florida offers the highest homestead exemption in the nation at $25,000, making real estate taxes among the lowest in the nation. Our cost of living is 5% below the national average. Charlotte County's business climate is strong and offers many opportunities.
Real Estate in Charlotte County
Big HouseThere are homes and home sites for every taste and budget. Punta Gorda Isles and Burnt Store Isles offer scenic views across and down sea walled canals which lead to Charlotte Harbor. There are three major gated communities in the area. One surrounds a 519-slip marina, has 27 holes of golf, lighted tennis courts and athletic club. Boca Grande Pass is less than ten miles due West which gives direct access to the Gulf of Mexico. There are homes ranging from villas, condominiums, courtyard and estate homes to custom homes built on a private point in the harbor. The harbor side restaurant is famous for its seafood buffet. Another is surrounding a golf course rated with 4 stars by Golf Digest. All of the homes and home sites in these communities are serviced by central water and sewer with deed restrictions maintaining a high level of appearance. Port Charlotte has a wide variety of waterfront and non-waterfront property. There are greenbelt and lake-front home sites on either side of Charlotte Harbor. Country estates with a minimum parcel size of five acres are just minutes away from Punta Gorda and offer privacy in a beautiful natural setting. Property in Charlotte County and the surrounding area is priced much more reasonably than that of other developed areas in Florida.
