         Bio

Ed Bell is a farmer from Hagerstown, IN (Wayne County). For the last two decades, Ed has been married to his wife Debbie who is a part-time R.N. They have a teenaged daughter named Nellie. Ed grew up on the family farm and has been farming since he graduated from Purdue University's AG. Short Course in 1981. Ed has raised grain, livestock, and truck crops on his 72-acre family farm. Presently, Ed grows black raspberries, asparagus, black berries, and several acres of strawberries. Ed and his family were named the 2006 Indiana Farm Faily of the Year.

Ed Bell is a gifted communicator, a powerful motivator, a born leader, and a true overcomer. He has had personal experience dealing with disability and hardships. In 1982 at age, twenty-one Ed survived a violent criminal attack and sustained a gunshot wound, which left him permanently paralyzed. Adversity has not been a stranger to Ed. Adversity has continued to be a regular visitor to the Bell family, including a fire that burned their old log home in 1995. Ed Bell has endured fiery trials of life that could have left him broken, but instead have made him stronger.

Ed Bell embodies the American Dream through his perseverance, endurance and service to others. In addition to farming and speaking Ed has served over ten years as a consultant for Purdue University's Breaking New Ground Project, which assists farmers and rural people with disabilities across the country. In the fall of 2000, Ed accepted a temporary position as the Executive Director for the newly founded Independent Living Center of Eastern Indiana. In just two short years Ed took this not-for-profit organization from one-hundred-and-twenty dollars to an annual operating budget of over three-quarters of a million dollars. Today the Center helps people with disabilities throughout seven east central Indiana counties. In the spring of 2003 Ed became an Account Executive for the Standing Wheelchair Company, which is North America’s only manufacturer of a manual standing wheelchair. Today, Ed continues to share his leadership skills by volunteering both in his church and as a gubernatorial appointee to the Indiana Governor’s Planning Council for People with Disabilities.

Regardless the venue, Ed will always be a farmer at heart. Despite life’s hardships Ed continues to till the soil and cultivate the hearts of people with his gift of communication. Ed Bell is available to share his insights, his humor, his optimism and his overcoming spirit through his presentations and public speaking to groups across the nation.
