On February 7th a group of Highwaymen held Useppans captive at the Barbara Sumwalt Museum.

Fifteen paintings were displayed representative of the Florida landscapes painted by a small group of talented Africa American artists. Author Gary Monroe described the exhibit and the work of these artists. He talked about their lives and works then signed copies of his books The Highwaymen and Harold Newton: The Original Highwayman.

The Highwaymen were men and one woman who began painting in the 1950’s selling their canvases from the trunks of cars along the East Coast of Florida for as little as $25.00. Now their paintings command in the thousands.

The lecture was arranged by Museum Director Rona Stage and hosted by The Useppa Island Historical Society. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres followed the presentation.
