Based on twenty five years of mouthpiece research and experimentation along with years of professional performing and teaching, David Hite and his wife and business partner Jean founded David Hite, Inc. in Columbus, Ohio, in 1979. As a manufacturer and distributor of personally hand finished woodwind mouthpieces and accessories, the original goal of the company was primarily to serve the professional player through personal consultation and custom work.

In 1983, the Hites moved to the New York City area to work more closely with the many players who work in the area and those who visit from all corners of the globe.

The scope of the company was enlarged in 1985 with the development of the PREMIERE by HITE mouthpiece line, designed to provide top professional quality at student-level prices.

In 1986 David Hite, Inc. moved to Southwest Florida where it continues to produce the professional J&D HITE line as well as the student PREMIERE mouthpieces. A patented ligature was added to the product line in 1990.

Jean and David are unique in the mouthpiece business. Both work full time in the business, maintaining regular shop/office hours. As players and as craftsmen, they share responsibilities in all aspects of the business ... design and specification decisions, personal adjustments on cores and cams, hand finishing and play-testing. They also share office work, packing and shipping, communication and all the other tasks that make a business function.
