To report a death, call (239) 277-5020 anytime day or night.

The following types of deaths must be reported to the District Medical Examiner:

• By criminal violence of any type;
• By accident of any type, including delayed deaths and deaths resulting from medical complications following an accident;
• By suicide;
• Suddenly while in apparent good health;
• Unattended by a practicing physician or other recognized practitioners*;
• In prison or penal institutions;
• In police custody;
• Under suspicious or unusual circumstances;
• By criminal abortion;
• By poison;
• By disease, injury or toxic agent resulting from employment;
• When a body is brought into the state without proper medical certification;
• When a body is to be cremated, dissected or buried at sea;
• By disease constituting a threat to public health.

If a death falls outside of these circumstances the Medical Examiner will decline jurisdiction.
